Home ownership

Individuals and families who are interested in applying for the Habitat program must meet a number of requirements, which fall into three categories- Need, Willingness to Partner, and the Ability to Pay.

Demonstrate Need

Families applying to the Habitat program must currently live in a substandard situation. Habitat defines substandard housing as:

  • Overcrowding
  • Substandard conditions (leaking roof, rotten floor, plumbing issues, electrical issues, etc..)
  • Cost-Burden

Be Willing to Partner

If selected a homeowner must perform sweat equity by working on their house and other Habitat houses and at the Habitat ReStore. Individual home buyers are asked to complete 250 hours, and couples are asked to complete 300 hours. One- third hours the hours can be "donated" by family and friends.

The Ability to Pay

Families must have stable, verifiable income sufficient to support a monthly payment and  other expenses. Habitat serves families earning less than 80% of are median income for Floyd, Polk, or Chattooga Counties. Income guidelines are set by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development.
